In order to use the online metrology software,.This invention relates to an apparatus for demodulating a received digital signal and is applicable particularly to a technique by which the signal is demodulated by use of a differential phase digital signal equal to the phase difference between two successive bits of the digital signal.
In the related art, for the demodulation of digital signals, such as DQPSK (Differential Quaternary Phase Shift Keying), a received differential phase digital signal is detected by averaging the plural cycles of differentials. In this case, the output of the A/D (Analog-to-Digital) converter is converted from an analog signal to a digital signal in 8-bit units to determine the averaging number. Thus, the output of the A/D converter is divided into 8 equal parts to determine the average data (averaging number), as shown in FIG. 1(a). Specifically, the averaging data is obtained by dividing each bit of the input signal V.sub.i-1 (A) by 8. By averaging the differential data of all the bits, it is possible to have a better characteristic.
However, in the case where, for example, the number of bits of the input signal is very large, such a technique cannot be applied since the averaging data of this number of bits cannot be obtained. In this case, therefore, the differential data of every 4 bits is averaged as shown in FIG. 1(b).
Further, as another example, in the case of 16QAM (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation), the D/A converter converts the analog received signal into a 16-bit digital signal in a time interval substantially equal to the reciprocal of the symbol rate, as shown in FIG. 2(a). At this time, it is impossible to obtain the optimal signal from the D/A converter due to the adverse influence of noise, etc.
